"when i grow up"
Award-winning photographer Murray Hidary’s body of work entitled “when I grow up” is a quintessential answer to the childhood question, “what do you want to be when you grow up?”
The classic answers posed are all represented by vintage objects and toys (some from the photographer’s own childhood) symbolizing those dreams.
Each visual field is a deconstruction and a reconstruction, encouraging the viewer to ask whether their dream, their passion, is becoming a reality or fading away with time.
Paradoxically, by abstracting the form of each subject, the work refocuses our attention on the existential; reminding the viewer to continue to ask that ageless question, “What do I want to be?”
Murray Hidary currently lives and works in New York City. Hidary studied music and composition at New York University, and recorded his first symphony in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2004. His photography has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the country and internationally.
